Fiery, fantastic, and French – this is probably how you would best describe Amélie. As alluded to by the original French title” Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain” (or” Amelie Poulain’s fabulous destiny” as we would say in English) this movie follows the sweet and hopelessly naive young woman Amélie.
As a child she is wrongly diagnosed with a heart disorder and is kept isolated at home. When her mother dies, her father is overcome by grief and Amélie is left alone with her very colourful imagination. When she grows up, Amélie finally finds her purpose in life – helping others. But now the big question is: who will fix Amélie’s problems, when she is busy running around and helping others?
At first glance, this might look like a very dark a depressing tale, however, this is far from true. And this is where we return to the fiery, fantastic, and French. It is life-affirming with all it’s little stories and from a technical point of view, it is very lively and surprising. Add to that a sort of surreal sense of humour and even the most serious scenes become just a little bit comical – without it being too much.
Therefore, I can only recommend for you to dive into the fantastic and fabulous word of Amélie as soon as possible.
